Briar Nook, Bremen

Sleeps 6 in 2 bedrooms and one bunkhouse; 1 full bathroom

Briar Nook is a sweet, sunny and breezy bungalow perched on the shores of Muscongus Sound in Bremen.

This tidy and exceedingly well-maintained cottage is the beloved summer residence of a local family who has enjoyed its views and waterfront for years.

Briar Nook brings with it the particulars that make a Maine Coast vacation all that it promises to be: a green lawn running down to the water, warm rocks that slope into the water, a wharf and float with a mooring and just about the most serenely gorgeous views you will find.

The house sits on the waterside of a gravel lane — the area buzzes with a kind of relieved excitement as you notice that everyone who lives in the neighborhood has been counting down the days until they could return to their house and their summertime lives in Maine.

The cottage itself is a wonderful retreat with an eye to what makes a summer cottage what it is and modern conveniences. The one level floor plan flows nicely with all common living spaces oriented towards the water — even the kitchen sink has views!

The kitchen, living room and dining room are all located in one large area — the kitchen is large and modern with everything needed to prepare meals at home — even a dishwasher.

A breakfast bar with stools separates the kitchen from the dining area — here find a table with seating for 6 to 7 and fabulous views of the deck and the waterfront.

The living room area is spacious with comfortable seating and a new flat screen television, but it may be difficult to pay attention to the TV when directly outside your door the sun is setting over Hog Island and boats are coming in for the night. The cottage also offers space for a laptop computer and DSL Internet connection for those who need to work during their vacation.

The bedrooms are at the back of the house so the rising sun doesn't wake you up too early — leave the room-darkening shades and blinds open if you want to make the most of the day and get up with the sun and the lobstermen!

The master bedroom has a king bed and the second bedroom has two twin beds that can be pushed together to make a larger bed. A bunk house, just 20 feet or so from the main house, provides sleeping space with its own views, electricity and two twin beds.

At the front of the house is a wonderful deck with a retractable awning for when shade is needed from the sun. The deck offers 3 gliders with cushions and the railing is built as seating as well.

The large wharf* makes the water completely accessible for boats from kayaks to larger motorized boats. The float allows you to dock in your front yard or tie up your tender and keep your sailboat on the mooring that comes with the cottage. If you don't have your own watercraft, a kayaking outfit just down the road provides rentals and tours.

Bremen is a small coastal town in Lincoln County, Maine. It is located on the eastern side of the Pemaquid Peninsula, facing the Medomak River and Muscongus Bay. Once part of Bristol, it became incorporated on February 19, 1828.

The town has a total area of 27.4 square miles, of which 16.5 square miles is land and 10.9 square miles is water. According to the 2000 census, Bremen has a year-round population of 782, which increases extensively in the summer. Two ponds, Webber and McCurdy, lie entirely within Bremen; two others, Pemaquid and Biscay, form the town's western boundary.

Several large islands lie just offshore in the Medomak River and Muscongus Bay, including Bremen Long Island and Hog Island, home of the nationally-known Audubon Camp and Todd Wildlife Sanctuary.

The main industry in town is centered on the coastal waterfront, primarily lobstering and clamming. The town is also home to several small businesses and cottage industries. The Bremen landscape is primarily forested, with occasional fields offering spectacular views of ponds and coastal waters.

Children in Bremen attend the Great Salt Bay School in Damariscotta and, generally, Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. The town has a Library, a Church, a Post Office and a Volunteer Fire Department. The old Bremen Town Hall is on the National Register of Historic Places. Bremen retains the town meeting form of government.

The quaint and bustling village of Damariscotta is just 7 miles away and the Rockland and Thomaston Areas are just 25 miles away.

*On occasion, the wharf may be used by members of the family that own Briar Nook. Every effort and care will be taken to not disturb or inconvenience renters. But, if you want to meet some wonderful, friendly Mainers, introduce yourself!
