Point of View, Cushing

Sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms; 2 1/2 bathrooms

Breathtaking location and stunning architecture — Point of View has the benefit of both.

Located at the tip of a seventy-five acre peninsula jutting into Maple Juice Cove, Point of View is a beacon for mariners as they enter this lovely sheltered cove. One of only five year round homes, it is accessed by a private half mile drive. Screened from the drive by mature plantings, the house rests on an open expanse of green lawn sloping gently to the water's edge. The lawn is punctuated by rocky outcroppings and perennials.

The house was custom designed and built in 2000 for the Elliott family of Thomaston, Maine. It showcases the exquisite craftsmanship that is the hallmark of Maine's 19th century ship building heritage. Elliott's grandchildren are the ninth generation of one of the earliest families who settled the town of Thomaston.

Point of View pays homage to the shingled seashore architecture reminiscent of Sandbars, a home overlooking Chatham Harbor on Cape Cod. Sandbars, built in 1928, was designed by Boston architect Edward Sears Read. Point of View is true to the aesthetic of Sandbars and its grand casualness while it offers the amenities and detail expected by today's owner.

Ten foot ceilings and large windows on the first floor provide spacious, open, light filled rooms, bringing the outside in. Magnificent water views are framed in oak from every window. The south facing ten foot high wall of windows running the entire length of the house provides unrestricted views of the cove. The cherry, oak and mahogany woodwork is a beautiful expression of the design and craftsmanship of master cabinetmaker Bill Faller of Rockland, Maine.

To accentuate the drop in grade from the house to the shore, a stone retaining wall was dry laid to resemble the rocky coastline using foundation stones of a barn once located on the property.

Local stone quarried from Washington and Searsmont, Maine, is used in the landscaping.

Be welcomed home as you wend your way up the one half mile private tree lined drive. Feel an immediate sense of comfort wash over you the moment you enter. Watch the sunlight ripple across the water or lobstermen in their boats hauling traps. Enjoy unparalleled views across a rolling green lawn that slopes gently to the water's edge and beyond. This is a place that welcomes you, your family and your guests.

The living room is striking with floor to ceiling views of the stone patio, the lawn and the water beyond. There is a solarium off the living room with truly comfortable lounge furniture. This room leads to the patio outside.

The kitchen is truly gourmet and the centerpiece of the house complete with Sub-Zero and Bosch appliances and granite countertops plus all the cooking implements a chef of any skill set could want. There is a dedicated dining area off the kitchen with seating for 6.

The family room flanks the kitchen — large and sunny, the room has lots of comfortable seating and limitless views. This room has a standard television with satellite televison, a DVD player and a stereo system.

The master bedroom is located on the first floor and has a private, en suite bathroom with double sinks, a deep tub and separate shower. The master bedroom has a king bed and a cedar lined closet. It is located on a private wing off the living room.

The other two bedrooms are on the second floor and share a full bath. The first bedroom is tucked into the eaves and has a queen bed. The third bedroom has a small private balcony — this is a multi-purpose room with a convertible couch/bed. The comfort of this convertible bed is ensured by a foam mattress topper.

There is a large, bright and sunny bonus room on this floor as well — perfect for meditation or yoga.

The house has a garage for guest use as well as a laundry room. A mooring is also available.

Lobsters can be purchased right from the dock — two local lobstermen use the dock next door to unload their daily catch. Watch firsthand how lobstermen work and then, have the freshest feast possible!
