Uncharted, Cushing
Sleeps 13 in 5 bedrooms; 3 1/2 bathrooms
Perfection is a word often overused in today's world. However, Uncharted defines the word in the truest sense.
Although this house, designed by famed Architect Robert A.M. Stern whose design won the 1994 Life Magazine Dream House Award was recently constructed, it absolutely feels like a traditional Maine summer house.
Old elements of style and detail are melded with modern necessities creating a property that exceeds all expectations of beauty, location and amenities.
Located in the exclusive Gaunt Neck area of Cushing, Uncharted is situated on 3 acres with almost 400 feet of waterfront. The house faces south across Hornbarn Cove and onto the islands of Muscongus Bay. The property also has the use of over 200 acres of pristine forests, a private wharf and dock and tennis courts.
The house offers over 3500 square feet of living space surrounded by a well manicured lawn that eases to the shoreline. Kayak and swim from the front lawn or use the private wharf (also a great spot to fish from).
There are 5 bedrooms (made up of 3 private suites), 3 full bathrooms and 1 half bath.
The front door opens onto a slate entry-way and an open and bright great-room part of the open-concept plan of the first floor of the house. The great-room centers around a large wood-burning fireplace and offers ample seating as well as French doors that open onto the 40' x 14' slate-tiled covered porch.
The porch, which overlooks the lawn and the waterfront, has a lounge area as well as a gas grill and a dining area. With a traditional bead-board ceiling, the porch even has ceiling fans to help cool guests if the shore breeze dies down.
A large dining area, with a farm table that can seat a sizeable group, separates the great-room from the kitchen this dining area also offers views and direct entry onto the porch via French doors.
This is one of the finest features of the house: both sets of French doors open completely, bringing the outside in. Retractable screens allow you to have these doors open at all times, creating a feeling of openness and light.
The great-room and the dining area are open to the kitchen allowing for cooking, entertaining and conversation all at once.
The kitchen is truly gourmet with sprawling granite countertops, a Wolff gas stove (with a grill and a griddle for Maine blueberry pancakes!), a Subzero refrigerator, trash compacter and an ultra-quiet Bosch dishwasher.
The island is the centerpiece of the kitchen with a prep/bar sink and a breakfast bar with 4 stools. There can be many people preparing meals together without feeling crowded.
There is an alcove with a small table perfect for breakfast, reading the paper, doing a puzzle or enjoying tea in the afternoon.
Off the kitchen, find a mudroom with a pantry and a full laundry room. There is also a half bath on this floor.
The master suite is located off the kitchen in a private wing of the house and is, in a word, magnificent. This suite has a study/den with a flat-screen television, a stunning bathroom with marble vanities, an extra-deep cast iron tub with a shower handle and a custom glass and marble shower.
The master bedroom, with a Tempurpedic king bed, overlooks the water and features a tray ceiling, a cozy and comfortable sitting area and lots of privacy.
Upstairs, find 2 other suites and a media room. The media room has the largest flat-panel TV in the house, comfortable seating, a desk with WiFi Internet connection and glass pocket doors that can be closed to minimize noise.
The first suite has 2 bedrooms and a full bathroom with a shower and tub.
The first bedroom has a queen bed and the most fabulous custom built-in day bed. Framing views of the waterfront, the day beds (found in all three bedrooms upstairs) are really twin beds and can be used as a bed for 1 adult or two smaller children without sacrificing comfort.
The second bedroom has 2 cast iron twin beds and an identical daybed. This suite can comfortably sleep 6+ people.
The second suite has a full bathroom with a tub and shower and a bedroom with a queen bed and another built-in day bed.
Outside of this bedroom, still in the suite, find a large multi-purpose room that has a trundle day bed that can sleep an additional 2 people. This bedroom can sleep 5+ people comfortably.
Uncharted is the ultimate saltwater summer house in the ultimate location. Perfect for large groups or smaller parties that expect to have guests at different times during their stay.
Every luxury is afforded and Uncharted will create classic summer vacation memories for years to come.
Note: although they are not shown, there are curtains on the first floor windows.
