Description

A light, bright, modern penthouse atop our 1880s sea captain’s home offers breathtaking views of Rockland Harbor. Enjoy downtown shopping, art galleries, museums and fine dining, all a short walk from home.

No worry in case of unusual weather, comfort on both floors is a push of a button away.

The penthouse can provide rare privacy for two couples or for a family with older children who appreciate space of their own.  In all, there’s a living room, a dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, two bedrooms, one on each floor, and two and one-half bathrooms. There is air conditioning on both floors.

The main floor bedroom with an adjacent half bath is furnished with a queen-sized bed and office alcove.  A full bath and laundry facilities are on the same floor. The upper-floor suite offers a king-sized bed and an adjacent room for reading, sky and water gazing or as a third, single bedroom.  There’s a full bathroom (shower only) on that floor.

The Rockland Harbor Lighthouse is visible from the third floor and the snug, second-floor deck and early risers can treat themselves to spectacular sunrises over Penobscot Bay from  there or most any room.

One caution: The penthouse starts one flight up, making it unsuitable for people with mobility problems and for very young children.

Finally, five things that made us fall in love with this wonderful place in Midcoast Maine:

1. Rockland is an easygoing coastal gem with a unique, hard-scrabble history, given to reinventing itself, where the people are welcoming and the water accessible by schooner, ferry, foot and lobster boat.

2.In fact, one of our favorite treats is a ride with Captain Jack, a fisherman who tells you almost all about his trade as he pulls up lobster traps. Just six people aboard at a time. Find out more at www.captainjacklobstertours.com.

3.The city offers foodies a mix of coastal and summer classics. For a start, lobster at Claws, Maine’s most vaunted hotdog at Wasse’s and blueberry pie most anywhere – as well as upscale dining at the intimate In Good Company and garden-to-table Primo with Melissa Kelly, a James Beard “best chef in the Northeast.”  On the home front the reward for a 4-minute walk is a sunset aperitif at  Archer’s on the Pier, a good spot too for seafood and generous shore fare.

4.There’s plenty of local food to gather by foot and enjoy at home, too, from Rock City coffee roaster, the neighborhood Southend Grocery, Jesse’s Market for fish or Wiggen’s Meat Market and the new gourmet Main Street Markets downtown.

5. For entertainment and education just down the street, Rockland boasts the Farnsworth Museum, home of Andrew Wyeth’s works, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art, the Children’s Museum, the Strand, a downtown theater with a full, eclectic schedule of cinema, music and comedy and the Museum of Sail, Steam and Power, featuring maritime history, Maine’s only Foucault’s Pendulum and evening musical delights, live and introduced by the inimitable Captain Jim Sharp. While some properties do have internet connection that is more “modern”, many properties are in locations that only allow for DSL or satellite connection which can be slower and at the mercy of weather, whole network connectivity and the like.
Please be aware SummerMaine cannot guarantee the speed or accessibility of the internet at any of our properties during your stay.
Outages of any type are not the basis for a refund. We cannot guarantee repair times or repair person availability.
With that said, if you have certain needs regarding the internet, please let us know and we will indicate the properties providing the service that best meets your needs.
